Laser Metal Deposition

Smart Radar Sensor for width measurement Hot Rolling Mills

Challenge

  • During Laser Metal Deposition the heat distribution behind the beam is an indication of a good or bad welding quality.
  • The sensor for temperature measurement must withstand the high energy density of the laser or its reflections.

Solution

  • The thermal imager looks directly and parallelly through the laser beam to the optics to see the impact zone of the laser
  • Temperature of each single laser pulse can also be measured
  • Easier installation
  • See complete heat distribution compared to looking only at impact zone

On Axis Installation view impact zone – Closed loop control can be created to monitor and control the energy of the laser beam

Off Axis Installation – view complete heat distributions
